An original pair of WW2 fly buttons that put together double as a compass. These were issued to aircrew and some army service men and SOE spy’s for escape and evasion purposes, they would have been sewn onto the battledress jacket or trouser fly as if a normal button but if in trouble they could easily be removed from the clothing and put together to form a very cleaver and accurate compass, the bottom button has a pointed spindle axis to it and the top button has a dished centre to allow it to locate on the lower buttons spindle, the bottom button is of the usual brass and the top is of magnetised steel that has then been coated to look like brass and to conceal it from being found if captured etc. these are an early war production as brass buttons were replaced with bakelite/plastic mid war. They are in perfect condition 100% original and come still wrapped in original tissue paper with cork bung to the spike, just as they left the factory that produced them.
